The Quiet Black was a Firefly RP I started writing for Brunchma-folks a few years ago - but darned if I don't still like it.
First couple of paragraphs are below the cut.
You've gotta know your history. Otherwise, it repeats itself.
Earth was dying. When our scientists found a new solar system,we leapt at the opportunity. We found - or made - hundreds of new Earths there.
The richer places banded together, forming the Alliance. Anybody who ever studied coulda told you that would happen. They were gonna bring peace and enlightenment to the rest, and heaven help them if anybody fought.
Of course we fought.
After the end of the war, the Independents left for the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. We call it the Rim, and a lot of people struggle to get by, without any help from high technology.
Ships'll bring you some work - and just as often, they'll bring you some trouble. Worst trouble of all is when they bring down the Alliance on you.
So you see, you gotta know your history.
How else will you break the cycle?
---------------------------
The Black is a big place. Every culture, colony, and family has their own little horror story about how a friend of a friend of a friend got stuck out in the middle of nowhere for months at a time, beaming a sorry little call for help out into that big emptiness. If you go off the shipping lanes, you might not see anything but stars. Fly into the right - or as most would have it, wrong - part of the Black, you might not even see the stars. It'd be a gorram miracle for two small bodies in motion to bump into each other accidentally out in the big bad emptiness of the 'verse.
Congrats to you all. You've just witnessed a miracle.
'Course, I'm not sure which laughin' god decided to send you the miracle of the Alliance.
The Cap'n stared out the window at the huge, gleaming capital ship that lay before the SparrowHawk. It took him several seconds before his brain registered exactly what it was seeing.
When it finally hit him, he frantically grabbed at the intercom mike.
"Uhh, ladies and gents, Civilization seems to have stopped by for tea."
